Establishing a Risk-Based Separation Standard for Unmanned Aircraft Self Separation
نویسندگان
چکیده
Unmanned Aircraft Systems require an ability to sense and avoid other air traffic to gain access to civil airspace and meet requirements in civil aviation regulations. One sense and avoid function is self separation, which requires that aircraft remain “well clear.” An approach is proposed in this paper to treat well clear as a separation standard, thus posing it as a relative state between aircraft where the risk of collision first reaches an unacceptable level. By this approach, an analyticallyderived boundary for well clear can be derived that supports rigorous safety assessment. A preliminary boundary is proposed in both time and distance for the well clear separation standard, and recommendations for future work are made. Interoperability of Horizontal and Vertical Resolution Advisories
To operate in civil airspace, unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) are expected to maintain safe separation from other aircraft. Self-separation and Collision Avoidance Systems (CAS) designed for unmanned aircraft are under development to meet this requirement. To maintain airspace safety, these systems must interoperate safely with CAS onboard manned aircraft. Whereas manned aircraft CAS such as TC...
متن کاملA Model for Runway Landing Flow and Capacity with Risk and Cost Benefit Factors
As the demand for the civil aviation has been growing for decades and the system becoming increasingly complex, the use of systems engineering and operations research tools have shown to be of further use in managing this system. In this study, we apply such tools in managing landing operations on runways (as the bottleneck and highly valuable resources of air transportation networks) to handle...
متن کاملEvaluation of separation strategies for Unmanned Aerial Systems
This paper analyzes loss of separation scenarios when an Unmanned Aircraft (UA) enters in conflict with a much faster airplane flying at the same altitude. Separation distances are analyzed in terms of minimum heading changes and reaction times. Results show that maneuvers need to be performed well in advance if the (low-speed) UA is the aircraft that changes its heading. In some cases the time...
متن کاملA TCAS-II Resolution Advisory Detection Algorithm∗
The Traffic Alert and Collision Avoidance System (TCAS) is a family of airborne systems designed to reduce the risk of mid-air collisions between aircraft. TCAS II, the current generation of TCAS devices, provides resolution advisories that direct pilots to maintain or increase vertical separation when aircraft distance and time parameters are beyond designed system thresholds. This paper prese...
متن کاملCharacteristics of a Well Clear Definition and Alerting Criteria for Encounters between UAS and Manned Aircraft in Class E Airspace!
Unmanned aircraft systems will be required to equip with a detect-and-avoid (DAA) system in order to satisfy the federal aviation regulations to remain well clear of other aircraft. For a DAA system to satisfy the requirement to stay well clear of other airborne traffic, a quantitative definition of well clear needs to be defined and evaluated. This study investigates the implications of UAS us...
